I ordered this insert in brown as I figured it would blend in well with the box art – and it does. I was a little nervous about the pick as there was no preview of the color alternatives, but all’s well and good.
I have not had a chance to try this out in a match yet, but I think while organizing the game and sleeving cards I saw enough. This insert is a very apt solution for organizing the game (which is a mess if you don’t have anything to contain the cards), and leaves a little extra space with the two larger compartments for some personal modifications, if any arise. I only have the base game, but judging by the images my statement still applies.
The overall plastic structure feels sturdy in most of the containers; the exception being the card holders as they don’t have full walls out of practical limitation and the bottom is quite thin. However, I don’t see them breaking as long as I don’t start bending them like an idiot. A slightly thicker card holder bottom would mitigate this concern.
My two other minor nitpicks are, first, the card holders couldn’t quite fit sleeved cards lengthwise – I had to cut just a smidge of excess sleeve (sleeves being Sleevy – Standard size) from the end of every card so that they’d fit properly (no cards were harmed, just sleeves). This only concerns you if you plan to sleeve the cards.
Secondly, the insert doesn’t account for the Dual Layer player boards. When all’s put in the box, the box lid will stay a smidge lifted (by roughly a single DL player board’s thickness). It’s not a huge difference, so I can live with it and most likely forget it’s an issue in the first place.
A small improvement I’d personally have on an insert like this is for the resource cube (gold, silver, bronze) container to be split into two shallower containers, so more players could perform resource production at the same time – a step that repeats every round during the game and takes a bit of time due to mental math and taking turns to access the cubes.
